Where does personality testing come from?
Around 460 BC, Hippocrates (an ancient Greek physician, also known as the “father of medicine”) suggested that humans had a 'persona' - a personality that was comprised of four distinct temperaments. He suggested that whatever trait was most dominant in a person determined their distinct personality.
Then around 1879, Withelm Wundt became not just the “father of psychology,” but also the first person to draw a clear distinction between the human body and a human personality theory. Thus, leading to a rise of the psychodynamic approach in the late 1800's which changed the way that we viewed and understood personality in relations to people connecting, interacting, or working together in different settings.
Additionally, the founder of the psychodynamic approach, Sigmund Freud, suggested that our personality was a lot more complexed than originally suggested and that our behavior, and personality, is driven by our innate drives and needs.
Next, Carl Jung, came along and theorized that there are only four human personality preferences which are thinking, sensing, intuition and feeling and that these influence our personality. By the time the 1900's rolled there was an increased interest in personality testing, assessments, and typing, especially in the workplace. As a result, gaining more understanding of one's personality helped people build their emotional quotient (“EQ” aka emotional intelligence “EI”), find the career or entrepreneurial path that best fit them, improve productivity, enhance relationships, and so forth.
Today, personality testing, assessments, and theories has greatly increased and become an excellent tool to help coaches, employers and leaders alike determine how to extract the greatest potential from themselves, their clients, employees or teams. People are now very familiar with personality quizzes such as the Myers-Briggs personality test, 16 Personalities, Big Five and various other IQ tests.
Why Should I Take Multiple Personality Tests?
Most of us have probably signed up for some streaming platform like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu. But have you ever felt like there should be one service that collates all those shows into one platform? Personality tests feel the same way at times. We take one personality test, and it tells us a thing or two about us but might miss out on some unique details. So, we take another personality test for individual or team analysis.
For example, an organization may want to understand its team’s personality profiles to improve workplace dynamics. So, they take the Big Five Personality test. But the Big Five Personality traits is too broad or descriptive. So, then a company proceeds to take a test like Myers-Briggs to cover that base. But then Myers-Briggs might be lacking in some areas too.
Then, far too often organizations, coaches and individuals fail to include a spiritual gifts assessment in their testing, assuming this is all about religion. However, a spiritual gift assessment will help you to identify “purpose.” Everyone wants and need to know their purpose. Once you know your purpose, you’ll be best equipped to make decisions that drive you to your “destiny.” Remember, purpose in a nutshell is the reason why you exist, destiny is where you show up based on your decisions. If you don’t know your purpose, your decisions will be off and thus your destiny can be altered or delayed. Many people take only take a personality test and find out their personality, decide on a career or entrepreneurial path that fits their personality but not support their purpose in life and when purpose is not fulfilled, there will always be a void. This is why both personality and spiritual testing and analysis are equally important.
Benefits for individuals
By taking different types of assessments, individuals get a more comprehensive analysis and understanding of how they work, think, and act. Each analysis has its own strong points when it comes to assessing how we’re wired. So, access to that kind of data will bring you more self-awareness and allow you to maximize your core competencies and traits.
Benefits for teams
The same is true for collective teams as well. We better understand how our team can work together to achieve goals together by looking at each other’s personalities, purpose, and traits. By accessing multiple tests, everyone understands how each team member is wired and whom they can approach to help them in areas where they might lack certain natural gifting or skill.
